Had the pleasure of visiting this bookstore for the first time yesterday, and I was truly impressed by their incredible collection of books and unique merchandise. I attended an author event held in the cozy basement, and the atmosphere was warm, inviting, and full of charm. The store owners were so welcoming and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. I left with a t-shirt and a book, and I'll definitely be returning to shop for more. It's the perfect place to find thoughtful gifts-especially this time of year!
I respect their resilience and their desire to provide uplifting, empowering literature for all ages as well as amazing merchandise options that cater to the community (whether you’re looking for something for a loved one of African descent, or you are of African descent!). Cheers to the oldest black owned bookstore in Brampton Ontario!
When I was in my late teens, my then favourite ‘conscious’ rapper, Talib Kweli, released a song entitled 2000 Seasons. At the time, I knew nothing of the song title’s inspiration. In the years to come, I would hear rumblings about Ayi Kwei Armah’s incredible work and became curious but much like his contemporary Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong'o, many of his works were no longer available in mainstream book stores. One afternoon, while browsing the shelves at Knowledge, I asked Bro.Sean if he had any of Ayi Kwei Armah’s work in stock. In typical Bro.Sean fashion, he proceeded to give me a brief history of Armah’s bouts with publishers and the scarcity of much of his titles and then assured me that he would do his best to secure a copy of 2000 Seasons for me. In what felt like less than a week, I received a call from Bro.Sean notifying me that my copy had arrived. The next chance I got, I made my way to Knowledge Bookstore to grab it. To my surprise, not only did Knowledge Bookstore have 2000 Seasons in stock, but a collection of Armah’s most choice reads, including one of my personal favourite novels, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born. This small account represents a piece of Knowledge Bookstore’s continual commitment to the provision of black literary genius for whosoever wishes to partake of it. May they continue to do this significant work. Much Love, Ibrahim Abd Rahman
